Kingsley Burton
Astrophotography
Join fine-art photographer Kingsley J. Burton for a whirlwind tour of his five-year dive into astrophotography’s “dark arts”—from first tripod shots to cooled cameras, EQ mounts, and the game-changing Seestar S50 smart scope. Packed with gear tips, war stories, and starlit laughs and fellowship, this talk has something for absolute beginners and equipment junkies alike.
Step into the star-soaked, sleep-deprived world of Kingsley J. Burton as he shares a five-year expedition with his partner Paul through the “dark arts” of astrophotography—dark not for its mood, but because every frame was captured after the rest of Perth went to bed. Beginning with nothing more than a trusty SLR camera, a rickety tripod, and an alarming caffeine habit, Kingsley charts the steep (and occasionally sideways) learning curve that led him to star trackers, esoteric EQ mounts, refractor and reflector telescopes, –20 °C-cooled astronomy cameras, and software so specialised it practically speaks in binary. You’ll hear the epic tales behind the gear, discover the inevitable obsessions (why three or more star trackers are obviously better than one), and pick up practical tips for every budget and ambition level—whether you just want to freeze the Milky Way over your favourite beach or you’re ready to process narrow-band nebulae until dawn. Plus, get the inside scoop on the new generation of smart telescopes—like the irresistibly tiny Seestar S50—that promise to turn curious night-owls into seasoned sky-hunters. Expect equal parts inspiration, hard-won wisdom, and the occasional cosmic dad joke. After all, when you spend your nights staring into infinity, a sense of humour is mandatory.

Biography
I am a fine art photographer based in Perth, Western Australia, dedicated to capturing the interplay of light, texture, and time. My journey began over four decades ago in a black-and-white darkroom, where I discovered the profound impact of visual storytelling.
Born in London and raised in Malaysia, I immigrated to Australia—experiences that have deeply influenced my artistic perspective. My work reflects a blend of traditional film techniques and modern digital processes, aiming to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Parallel to my artistic pursuits, I have spent over 38 years in healthcare leadership, a path that has enriched my understanding of human resilience and transformation. This duality informs my photographic approach, allowing me to create images that resonate on both emotional and intellectual levels.
My portfolio comprises over 600 images held in private and commercial collections. While I have received accolades such as the International Colour Awards, reFocus Awards, Fine Art Photography Awards, and the Black and White Spider Award, my focus remains on crafting evocative pieces that stir the imagination.
